Boat crew

Waterways Experiences

We are currently recruiting crew members for our three boats. You will need to be physically fit and able to undertake all the duties required of our crew members. Experience not necessary as full training will be given. We normally have a skipper and two crew on most trips, so some of the duties are shared.

Detailed Description

We are currently recruiting crew members for our three boats. No previous experience of canal boating is necessary but you must be physically fit and reasonably agile and strong. Once registered as a potential trainee, we will offer you a 'taster' trip on one of our client trips where you can shadow the crew and see what is involved. On each trip the skipper is accompanied by two, or in some cases three trained crew members and on your taster trip you will be able to see how the crew work together. after that, the next step is to complete a 2 part training schedule involving a mix of teaching and hands on practice. Participating in the training programme is required for experienced canal boaters as well as novices. This is to ensure that we all follow our consistent safety wise crewing practices. About volunteering for Waterways Experiences You would be joining a highly motivated and friendly team of over 150 regular volunteers. The largest group are those who undergo special training to act as boat crew or skipper for our year-round day trips offered to disability groups and the general public. About a third of these volunteers also undertake ‘back office ‘ functions such as client bookings, membership administration, crew allocations, marketing, finance, IT etc. These roles are divided amongst dedicated teams, each with its own leader. We have a formal volunteer agreement which explains what you can expect of Waterways Experiences and what we expect of volunteers. If you think you might be interested in this role, please fill in basic details about yourself on our Volunteer Expression of interest form on our website, and we will contact you within 7 days to arrange an informal chat at our boat base, ideally on a Wednesday if convenient for you. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and age groups (minimum age 16 years old). https://wexp.org.uk/volunteer/
