A Home-Start Volunteer Family Mentor visits families in their own homes for 2-3 hours, once a week. Volunteers will be matched to families depending on their skills and experience. Family Mentors offer practical and emotional support to parents so that they can cope with the challenges they are facing, get back on track and offer their children the best start in life possible.
Home-Start Herts is a local charity supporting families who are experiencing tough times. Home-Start offer a support service to help families get back on track and in turn ensure parents can offer their children the best start in life possible. Home-Start match a trained Volunteer Family Mentor to a family who will support them in their own homes and help them cope with the challenges life has thrown at them. Family Mentors undergo a free Preparation Course - one day a week for 5 weeks - before they are matched with a family.

In order to be considered for this role, you must: • Experience in a parenting role, or of working with children • Have a positive attitude to working with people of any gender, family status or sexual identity, or who are from any ethnic origin, culture or religion, or who may have a disability • Demonstrate a sensitive and caring attitude towards others • Have a non-judgmental attitude • Be clear about confidentiality and when a confidence remains so, but be able to decide when disclosure of a confidence is essential to the well-being of a child • Be reliable and understand the importance of reliability to the family • Have good communication skills including an ability to listen • Understand the need for support • Have a warm and open personality and a sense of humour • Have time and enthusiasm for Home-Start • Be able to work as a member of a team • Be prepared to keep records as requested by the scheme • Be prepared to attend group support meetings at least three times per year • Be prepared to attend supervision with the Coordinator every six weeks
By taking on the role of a Volunteer Family Mentor you would gain great satisfaction in knowing that you are helping parents and children who are struggling, while doing something for yourself. By helping families you are not only helping individual parents and children but in turn you are helping the wider society and community.
